- Protect your home
We set up a drop cloth in front of the fireplace and place all of our equipment on it.
- Sweep from the bottom up
Extension rods and specialty brushes made for your type of fireplace clean the unit thoroughly. If roof access allows, we also sweep from the top down.
- Capture every bit of soot
Our high-volume "Soot Sweeper" vacuum moves 700 cubic feet of air per minute, eight to ten times a typical shop vacuum, with two filters to protect your home.
- Visual inspection
We check the unit so you know your fireplace is visibly sound, and point out anything that needs attention.

Burn smarter
Good firewood means less creosote.
Firewood is where you have the most influence over how well your fireplace performs. Well-seasoned wood burns cleaner and more efficiently. Green or wet wood causes smoking and odor problems, rapid creosote buildup and possibly dangerous chimney fires.
Signs of properly seasoned wood
- 1Color. A dull gray with dark ends.
- 2Bark. It's falling off the wood.
- 3Cracks. The ends start to split.
- 4Touch. It's much lighter to pick up.
- 5Sound. A clear clunk when two pieces hit.
Firewood tips
- Cut your wood 6 months to a year before burning.
- A standard cord measures 4′ high by 4′ wide by 8′ long.
- Store wood on a rack, away from the house, to deter bugs and moisture.
- Never burn construction scraps, painted or stained wood, or railroad ties. They release toxins.
- Artificial logs are sawdust, glue and chemicals, and still produce creosote.

How often does my chimney need to be cleaned?
The National Fire Protection Association recommends a yearly inspection, with cleaning and repairs done as necessary.
The general rule of thumb is after burning about one cord of wood, or every 2 to 3 years if you don't burn that much.
Before you light a fire after the long summer, it's always a good idea to have your chimney inspected. Creosote isn't the only thing we look for: birds may have built a nest, debris may have fallen down the chimney, or mortar joints in the firebox may be cracked and need repair.
Do chemical cleaner logs really work?
The Chimney Safety Institute, a non-profit educational institution for preventing chimney and venting hazards, has said: “The use of these products alone is not an adequate substitute for mechanical chimney cleaning and inspection because it does not provide the same level of protection to the chimney system.” The logs may create a false sense of security.
The chemical in these logs has been used by professional sweeps for years to change hard, tacky third-degree creosote into a powdery form so it can be removed by a chimney cleaning.
The creosote doesn't dissolve or vanish; it still has to be swept out. The fine print on the logs says, “The Cleaning Log is not intended to replace an inspection and professional cleaning.” A log also can't detect any other problems with your fireplace.
Can I burn artificial logs in my fireplace?
They're convenient when you want a quick fire. Usually they should be burned one at a time, and only in an open fireplace. Once they're burning, be careful about poking or moving them, since they can break up and the fire may get out of control. Read the directions on the package carefully.
They do produce creosote that has to be cleaned out. They're made of sawdust, glue and chemicals.

How do you clean a chimney without making a mess?
We set up a drop cloth in front of the fireplace for all of our equipment, and use extension rods and several types of specialty brushes designed for your type of fireplace. The unit is swept thoroughly from the bottom up, and if roof access allows, we also sweep from the top down.
